Welcome the new iPod nano, just like the old (old) iPod nano

As we closed in on the three-year anniversary of the introduction of the original iPod nano, there was no question in anyone's mind that the FallApple Event would see the launch of the fourth generation of the pint-sized music player. Predictably, Apple met that expectation, and the company still somehow managed to get fans buzzing about yet another redesign of the device.
A physical redesign! New colors! New features! Even though many of the new nano's details were leaked ahead of time—and despite the fact that the iPhone/iPod touch are the future of the iPod line—people just can't get over the original iPod's little brother.

What is the Difference Between Laptop and Netbook?

So what is the difference between laptop and netbook? A laptop (also called a notebook) is computer which has been designed to be made portable, featuring a screen hinged to a keyboard. A laptop includes a battery for portable power and a touchpad instead of a mouse for input.
Mini laptops (also called a netbook, subnotebook or ultraportables) take these ideas further still, creating a new market above handheld computers, smartphones and personal digital assistants. The primary characteristic of these are smaller size and weight, which are pretty similar to the average diary, as well as costing less than a standard laptop with prices starting at around £150, an excellent solution during the credit crunch!

Mini laptops aren't as powerful as bigger notebook computers, and lack the power for big, demanding programs as well as an optical disc drive - so no CDs or DVDs. None the less, connectivity is a central focus for netbooks. Internet downloads are quickly catching up on hard media products, so perhaps it's not such a loss.
In short, the difference between laptop and netbook is a netbook is smaller, lighter, cheaper (on the whole) and simpler.

New mini laptops are expected to sell in the region of 5.2 million units by the end of 2008, 8 million during 2009 and up to 50 million by 2012 - a ten fold growth. Industry analysts are torn whether or not subnotebooks will cannibalize the laptop market, some suggesting that a mere 10% market share will be taken. However, in this economic downturn, people will always look for cheaper products and with mini laptops available from £150-200, perhaps there is a big market after all.

So is it game over for the standard laptop and pc? Unlikely; whilst mini laptops can perform dozens of tasks to identical or similar standard of larger computers, they will (for the time being) be limited by battery size, processing power and storage space, the difference between laptop and netbook is pronounced enough not to make the former obsolete.

Furthermore, when using a computer over a prolonged period of time, it would make sense to use a bigger screen and a faster processor of a desktop replacement laptop or a PC, particularly for demanding programs' such as games.
And finally, similarly priced but laptops, of varying quality, are available for around £200-300 leading some industry analysts to believe that the consumer focus will be on functionality and not merely size and weight.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, mobile phone manufacturers and providers are tapping into the netbook market with the Samsung NC10, LG X110 and Carphone Warehouse launching the Webbook - a branded laptop made by Elonex. Vodafone has linked arms with Dell with its Inspiron Mini 9, offering 3G mobile broadband contracts. Orange have followed suit with by cosying up with Asus and the Eee PC 901.

The difference between laptops and netbooks may seem very vague, but there is certainly space for both to function. If you've got a laptop, even reading this on one, lift it up. Feel the weight of it. Ask yourself, do I need all this extra space? Would I be better off with something smaller and lighter - if the answers yes, browse around the site.

History of Laptop Computers

It is a little hard to determine what was the first portable or laptop computer, the first portable computers did not look like the book-sized and folding laptops that we are familiar with today, however, they were both portable and lapable, and lead to the development of notebook style laptops.
I have outlined several potential firsts below and how each qualifies, many of the off-site links provide good photos of the computers that will let you see the progression in design.
Designed in 1979 by a Briton, William Moggridge, for Grid Systems Corporation, the Grid Compass was one fifth the weight of any model equivalent in performance and was used by NASA on the space shuttle program in the early 1980's. Gavilan Computer As The First Laptop?Manny Fernandez had the idea for a well-designed laptop for executives who were starting to use computer. Fernandez, who started Gavilan Computer, promoted his machines as the first "laptop" computers in May 1983. Many historians consider the Gavilan as the first fully functional laptop computer.

The First Laptop Computer - Osborne 1 The computer considered by most historians to be the first true portable computer was the Osborne 1. Adam Osborne, an ex-book publisher founded Osborne Computer and produced the Osborne 1 in 1981, a portable computer that weighed 24 pounds and cost $1795.
The Osborne 1 came with a five-inch screen, modem port, two 5 1/4 floppy drives, a large collection of bundled software programs, and a battery pack. The short-lived computer company was never successful. (second photo)

More History of Laptop Firsts
Also released in 1981, was the Epson HX-20, a battery powered portable computer, with a 20-character by 4 line LCD display and a built-in printer.

In January of 1982, Microsoft's Kazuhiko Nishi and Bill Gates begin discussions on designing a portable computer, based on using a new liquid crystal display or LCD screen. Kazuhiko Nishi later showed the prototype to Radio Shack who agree to manufacture the computer.
In 1983, Radio Shack released the TRS-80 Model 100, a 4 lb. battery operated portable computer with a flat and more of a laptop design.

In February 1984, IBM announced the IBM 5155 Portable Personal Computer.
Three years later in 1986, Radio Shack released the improved and smaller TRS Model 200.
In 1988, Compaq Computer introduces its first laptop PC with VGA graphics - the Compaq SLT/286.

In 1989, NEC UltraLite was released, considered by some to be the first "notebook style" computer. It was a laptop size computer which weighed under 5 lbs. (second photo)
In September 1989, Apple Computer released the first Macintosh Portable that later evolved into the Powerbook. (second photo)

In 1989, Zenith Data Systems released the Zenith MinisPort, a 6-pound laptop computer. (more Zenith laptops)
In October 1989, Compaq Computer released its first notebook PC, the Compaq LTE.
In March 1991, Microsoft released the Microsoft BallPoint Mouse that used both mouse and trackball technology in a pointing device designed for laptop computers.

In October 1991, Apple Computers released the Macintosh PowerBook 100, 140, and 170 - all notebook style laptops. (more on Powerbooks)
In October 1992, IBM released its ThinkPad 700 laptop computer.
In 1992, Intel and Microsoft release APM or the Advanced Power Management specification for laptop computers.

In 1993, the first PDAs or Personal Digital Assistants are released. PDAs are pen-based hand-held computers.

Olympus C-8080 Wide Zoom

Manufacturer Overview

Free Photo Lessons
Learn how to really use full-functioned cameras like this one - Visit our free Photo Lessons area! The Olympus C-8080 Wide Zoom digital camera is the latest in a long line of Olympus Camedia models stretching back to the earliest days of the consumer digicam industry. Olympus is one of the truly dominant players in the digicam marketplace, with a current product line that ranges from bare-bones entry level models like the D-390 to their "from the ground up" all-digital SLR, the E-1.

The Camedia C-8080 Wide Zoom represents an evolution of the previous top-end C-5060 model, combined with user interface elements borrowed from some of Olympus' earlier pro models, such as the E-10 and E-20. The 5x wide-angle zoom lens reaches to 28mm, and offers a very "fast" maximum aperture range of f/2.4 to f/3.5, unusual in a longer-ratio zoom lens. Besides the 8-megapixel CCD, new long/fast zoom lens, and improved user interface, the C-8080 also incorporates a phase-detection autofocus system using an external phase-detect sensor for faster autofocus performance.
While I've seen phase-detect AF systems in some other cameras produce very ho-hum autofocus speed, the system in the C-8080 does appear to help AF speed a great deal, as the camera's overall shutter lag is among the best that I've seen in a prosumer camera.
I originally wrote the "First Look" version of this review in mid-February of 2004, having seen only a prototype model at that point, which hadn't had its image quality tweaked to final specs yet. While I couldn't comment on its image quality at that time, the rest of the C8080's capabilities looked impressive indeed.
Now that I've had the opportunity to test a production model of the 8080, I'm all the more impressed: Olympus' investment in the excellent lens design of this camera translates into exceptional sharpness and clarity in its images, not to mention excellent low-light capability, thanks to its generous f/2.4 maximum aperture.
The entire camera exudes build quality as well, making this one of the best 8-megapixel models thus far on the market. Read the rest of this review for all the details: If you're in the market for an 8-megapixel digicam, you should give the C-8080 a long, hard look.

New Intel-Based Laptops Advance All Facets of Notebook PCs

New Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor Technology Brings 'HD-to-Go'; Adds Security and Manageability Features, Boosts Speed, Battery Life and Wireless Range.

SAN FRANCISCO, July 15, 2008 – Intel Corporation unveiled its Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor Technology products for laptops today, powered by five new Intel® Core™2 Duo processors. Close to 250 innovative consumer and business notebook PC designs are on the way, including those equipped with the right combination of powerful processors, graphics and battery life to enjoy viewing stunning high definition videos and myriad other computer and Internet activities.

Intel also introduced the world's highest-performing dual-core mobile processor, the Intel® Core™2 Extreme processor running at a brisk 3.06 GHz, as measured by SPECint*_rate_base2006, an industry benchmark (www.spec.org)**.

Rounding out a mobile-focused summer for the company, Intel said it also plans to unveil eight processors within 90 days that will include first-ever mobile quad-core products and second-generation products for ultra-thin and light notebooks. In total, Intel will bring 14 diverse new processors into the marketplace as laptop sales continue to outpace desktop PCs.

Formerly codenamed Montevina, Intel Centrino 2 processor technology and Intel® Centrino® 2 with vPro™ Technology improve upon every facet of a laptop's main features, including performance and battery life via new processors and chipsets, faster draft 802.11n wireless (with WiMAX arriving later this year), and new business-class manageability capabilities.

"When we first introduced Intel Centrino back in 2003, there were very few Wi-Fi hotspots, YouTube videos and social media didn't really exist, ‘thin and light' only referred to weight goals and desktop PCs outsold notebooks by a very wide margin," said Mooly Eden, Intel corporate vice president and general manager of the company's Mobile Platforms Group. "Today, notebooks outsell desktops in the U.S, and we're paving the way to HD entertainment, rich online gaming, faster broadband wireless speeds and an easier and more secure way for businesses to manage, update and repair their notebook fleets."

Intel is introducing five dual core processors based on Intel's reinvented transistors (high-k metal gate formula) and advanced 45-nanometer manufacturing process. These processors come with a faster 1066MHz front side bus and up to 6MB of L2 cache, and three versions reduce laptop processor wattage about 30 percent, down to just 25 watts. Also featured is Deep Power Down Technology that turns off processing components such as core clocks and cache memory when the laptop is idle for greater energy savings.

Intel also unveiled its Mobile Intel® 45 Express Chipset and wireless Intel® Wi-Fi Link 5000 series that is shipping to customers now, with laptops arriving later in July and August. Delivering five times the speed and twice the range of older 802.11a/g technology, the Intel Wi-Fi Link 5000 series provides 802.11 draft-N support that delivers the fastest data rates possible today -- up to 450 Mbps.

Switchable graphics, a new optional power-saving feature available on Intel Centrino 2-based notebooks, provides both integrated and discrete graphics on a single notebook, enabling users to easily switch between the two options. Switchable graphics delivers greater 3-D performance when needed while providing the option for greater power savings for the best of both worlds.
For consumers, Intel Centrino 2 processor technology delivers the horsepower and battery life to enjoy a typical full-length, Blu-ray* high-definition video on a single battery charge for the first time, plus the ability to play a variety of online games, download music or post videos faster than before.

For businesses, Intel Centrino 2 with vPro technology offers enhanced manageability and security options. This is increasingly important as companies replace desktops with notebooks and need to remotely diagnose, update and repair systems over a wireless network. Improved manageability with AMT 4.0 has also been added that provides wireless manageability during system sleep states, ongoing remote configuration capabilities, support for next-generation management standards (WS-MAN and DASH 1.0) and the ability for an employee to initiate communications to IT from outside a company's firewall.

OEMs and Channel system builders will deliver close to 250 systems to market. For more information including Intel product pricing, visit www.intel.com/go/processor_pricing. WiMAX MomentumLater this year in the United States, Intel will begin shipping its first-ever combined WiMAX/Wi-Fi module, part of the Intel® WiMAX/Wi-Fi Link 5050 Series that is an optional feature for future Intel Centrino 2-based laptops. WiMAX is a 4G, Internet protocol-based broadband wireless technology that complements Wi-Fi networks.

WiMAX also provides much wider Internet and phone voice coverage, and unlike Wi-Fi has the ability to unwire entire cities or communities, connecting users even when they're on the move. Intel is working with service providers around the world to deploy WiMAX networks, with initial U.S. network availability starting later this year from Sprint XOHM and Clearwire.

Nikon D90 Black SLR Digital Camera Kit

Nikon D90 digital SLR camera review : The D90 as a possible successor to the D80 was a consistent rumor in the air. Yet two years would pass by before the Nikon D90 was actually here. The moment we held the Nikon D90 in our hands for the first time, we had to search for the differences in the design, though.

Minor adjustments of the design with neater and clearer curves, confirm it is indeed the new Nikon DSLR. Naturally, the main changes are found inside the camera. Here, Nikon has altered many things to enable the D90 to connect to the line of new DSLR cameras such as the D300, D700 and D3.

Nikon D90 review including a DIWA Lab test

The Nikon D90 is equipped with the latest technique, combined with innovations coming from Nikon's higher segment. Yet the D90 does not aim at the semipro market, instead it aims at the amateur market. The operation of the Nikon D90 is therefore kept as simple as possible, in order to ensure that the beginning, not so experienced photographer will be able to work with the menu of the camera fast and effortlessly.

We were given the opportunity to use and test the camera in practice and in addition, the Nikon D90 was extensively technically tested in our DIWA Lab. Both tests resulted in this full Nikon D90 review.

Canon EOS 40D SLR Digital Camera Kit

Canon EOS 40D -
Housing & Viewfinder For me the main improvements are found in a totally different area. We have been asking for it for ages and finally we got it: a housing that can stand a rain shower and dust. The weather sealing is not as advanced as it is on the EOS 1D series, but you don’t have to cover or hide the camera when it is raining and you are able to shoot problem-free on the beach.
The next very important if not the most important improvement is the viewfinder. At last Canon has equipped a camera in this class with a decent viewfinder of a decent size. So finally we got rid of the small viewing angle. The Canon 40D has the ISO visible in the viewfinder and it remains visible during setting which is a welcoming improvement.

Canon 40D SLR

camera review Naturally the sensor size remained the same and the Canon EOS 40D offers a crop factor of 1.6x. It enables continuing the use of EF-S lenses, among them the large wide angle. In front of the sensor a filter is positioned that shakes to remove dust. The same system is found in the EOS 400D and 1D series and it works fine.

LetsGoDigital tested the Canon EOS 40D during the EOS Safari 2007 event in Kenya, Africa with a beautiful 400mm f/2.8 telephoto lens and in the Netherlands with a standard EF-S 17-85mm 1:4-5.6 IS USM lens. Our findings can be read in the following Canon EOS 40D review.

Samsung GX-10

DCResource has a review of the Samsung GX-10 and writes, "The GX-10 ($999) is Samsung's third digital SLR. Like the other two (the GX-1S and GX-1L), the GX-10 is based on a Pentax camera -- in this case, the Pentax K10D.
The differences between the GX-10 and the K10 are subtle changes in the user interface (menus and buttons), RAW support (the GX-10 only supports one RAW format: DNG), and the software bundle. ... With the same sensor, image processor, and firmware, the GX-10's photo quality and performance is identical to that of the K10D.
In terms of photo quality, this means that the GX-10 has mediocre straight-out-of-the-box JPEG quality (which can be fixed if you tweak some settings), and great RAW image quality. ... Since the Samsung GX-10 and Pentax K10D are 99% identical, is there any reason to buy one over the other? Not particularly.
Yeah, the K10D is the only one with a battery grip, but that should change shortly according to Samsung. My advice is to buy the one you can get the best deal on."
