Nikon D90 Black SLR Digital Camera Kit

Nikon D90 digital SLR camera review : The D90 as a possible successor to the D80 was a consistent rumor in the air. Yet two years would pass by before the Nikon D90 was actually here. The moment we held the Nikon D90 in our hands for the first time, we had to search for the differences in the design, though.

Minor adjustments of the design with neater and clearer curves, confirm it is indeed the new Nikon DSLR. Naturally, the main changes are found inside the camera. Here, Nikon has altered many things to enable the D90 to connect to the line of new DSLR cameras such as the D300, D700 and D3.

Nikon D90 review including a DIWA Lab test

The Nikon D90 is equipped with the latest technique, combined with innovations coming from Nikon's higher segment. Yet the D90 does not aim at the semipro market, instead it aims at the amateur market. The operation of the Nikon D90 is therefore kept as simple as possible, in order to ensure that the beginning, not so experienced photographer will be able to work with the menu of the camera fast and effortlessly.

We were given the opportunity to use and test the camera in practice and in addition, the Nikon D90 was extensively technically tested in our DIWA Lab. Both tests resulted in this full Nikon D90 review.

Canon EOS 40D SLR Digital Camera Kit

Canon EOS 40D -
Housing & Viewfinder For me the main improvements are found in a totally different area. We have been asking for it for ages and finally we got it: a housing that can stand a rain shower and dust. The weather sealing is not as advanced as it is on the EOS 1D series, but you don’t have to cover or hide the camera when it is raining and you are able to shoot problem-free on the beach.
The next very important if not the most important improvement is the viewfinder. At last Canon has equipped a camera in this class with a decent viewfinder of a decent size. So finally we got rid of the small viewing angle. The Canon 40D has the ISO visible in the viewfinder and it remains visible during setting which is a welcoming improvement.

Canon 40D SLR

camera review Naturally the sensor size remained the same and the Canon EOS 40D offers a crop factor of 1.6x. It enables continuing the use of EF-S lenses, among them the large wide angle. In front of the sensor a filter is positioned that shakes to remove dust. The same system is found in the EOS 400D and 1D series and it works fine.

LetsGoDigital tested the Canon EOS 40D during the EOS Safari 2007 event in Kenya, Africa with a beautiful 400mm f/2.8 telephoto lens and in the Netherlands with a standard EF-S 17-85mm 1:4-5.6 IS USM lens. Our findings can be read in the following Canon EOS 40D review.

Nokia 5030
Nokia 5030 is the company's first phone with an internal FM radio antenna, which eliminates the need for a headset or external speakers. The one touch FM radio and channel selection keys on the side of the device ensure the product lives up to its XpressRadio name. Placed sideways on the table, the Nokia 5030 doubles as a portable FM radio and is ideal for emerging markets, where people rely on a radio as their main source of entertainment and news. One of Nokia's most affordable devices to offer an FM radio, the Nokia 5030 is expected to begin shipping in the second quarter of 2009 with an estimated retail price of less than 40 EUR, before taxes or subsidies. Additional press materials and photos can be found at www.nokia.com/press/

Samsung GX-10

DCResource has a review of the Samsung GX-10 and writes, "The GX-10 ($999) is Samsung's third digital SLR. Like the other two (the GX-1S and GX-1L), the GX-10 is based on a Pentax camera -- in this case, the Pentax K10D.
The differences between the GX-10 and the K10 are subtle changes in the user interface (menus and buttons), RAW support (the GX-10 only supports one RAW format: DNG), and the software bundle. ... With the same sensor, image processor, and firmware, the GX-10's photo quality and performance is identical to that of the K10D.
In terms of photo quality, this means that the GX-10 has mediocre straight-out-of-the-box JPEG quality (which can be fixed if you tweak some settings), and great RAW image quality. ... Since the Samsung GX-10 and Pentax K10D are 99% identical, is there any reason to buy one over the other? Not particularly.
Yeah, the K10D is the only one with a battery grip, but that should change shortly according to Samsung. My advice is to buy the one you can get the best deal on."

Nikon D2X | Digital Camera Review | Camera

One of the most important requirements for the Nikon D2X is a solid housing.
And the D2X digital reflex certainly is a solid camera. Although it looks rather compressed it still looks nice. Characteristic is the familiar red border.
The D1X was based on the Nikon F5 but the tables are turned with the D2X. The analogue Nikon F6 is based on the D-SLR. Just like the D2H and D1X, the Nikon D2X features a built-in vertical handgrip. It makes the camera larger and at the same time it offers a perfect hand-fit.
Horizontally as well as vertically the D2X offers a good grip. Holding the Nikon D2X really gives you the feeling that you're working with a real robust digital tool.

Nikon D2X digital reflex camera
When we take a look at the front side of the digital reflex camera, the appearance of the Nikon D2X is beautiful. Remarkable is the white balance sensor on top of the viewfinder. Left on the handgrip the familiar red border is found. On top of this border the command dial is found to adjust aperture among other things.

A similar dial is also found on the bottom side of the handgrip, meant for photographing in vertical mode. Left from the bayonet mount two buttons are placed. One serves as check button for the depth of field. Pressing it you will hear about the exact same sound as when taking a picture. Below this button a programmable button is placed.

On the right of the metal bayonet, the Nikon D2X contains the lens unlock with below it the switch for the focus modes. It has been like this since the first auto focus Nikon, the F501 from 1985. "Never change a winning team." Top right the indicator LED for the self-timer is positioned with below it the connection for a studio flash light.

And below that a ten pin connector for remote control. Both connections are hidden behind small caps which unfortunately get lost easily with most photographers. You just tend to loose these caps once you have removed them, at least that is what happens to me! Nikon D2X SLR - Rubber protection & connections In order to prevent loosing these caps, the inside of the two rubber protection lids feature two holders for the caps.

You just have to know this fact! Behind the rubber the connections for audio/video are found, the DC-in and the USB connection. The rubber covers don't turn away and when closed they shut everything off perfectly. It's one of the many protections used against dust and water. In the bottom of the handgrip the battery is placed and this holder is also equipped with a rubber protection.

Nikon D2X digital reflex -
Back side of the camera The back of the Nikon D2X offers a busy vista; you hardly see the camera through the many buttons. Top left we start with the play button, with right next to it the recycle bin. If the delete button is depressed with the Mode button on top of the camera at the same time, the memory card can be deleted very fast.

A bit above the lens we find the lever to close the lens. The rubber ring around the lens can only be removed when the lens is closed. A simple but very effective way to prevent you from loosing the eye shell. A bit more to the right the AE/AF lock and AF-ON button are found.

This latter one serves to activate the focus. Especially handy when you're dealing with moving objects. Completely on the right the Commend dial is positioned.

Nikon D2X SLR camera -
LCD monitor In the centre the large sized 2.5 inch LCD monitor is positioned, protected by a separate cap, protective and transparent. In a row below the monitor we find: the menu button, the button for reproduction of thumbnails, security and help button, enter button/play zoom button and finally a loudspeaker.

Right from the loudspeaker a second LCD is placed for rendering a number of digital settings. Below another row of buttons is placed. From left to right these are the buttons for sensitivity, image quality size and white balance and the last one is the microphone. To the right from the lowest monitor the button to activate the microphone is placed so you can add some comments to your photos. Above it the button for selecting auto focus areas is placed.

Dominating is the tumble switch to select the AF areas or scroll through a photo. Entirely on the right the door to the memory compartment is found, equipped with a rubber edge. The cover can be opened by pressing the unlock button on the left below the door. A fine and safe security to prevent from accidentally opening the door, without it costing too much time to open it.

A lot of thought has been put into it! Finally on the back of the camera bottom right, we find a second AF-ON button and a second command dial, which come in very handy when taking vertical images. It would have also been handy to place a second AE/AF lock. That brings us to the end of our tour of the camera's back, but we're not finished yet with the entire camera.

Nikon D2X SLR -
More buttons… On top we find a few more buttons starting on the left.
Here we find an unlock button to enable turning the dial for image speed. On top of the dial some buttons for bracketing, lock settings and flash sync are placed.

The standard hot shoe is placed on top of the viewfinder. And on the right the button to select light metering and dioptre setting are placed. The right side is dominated by a large sized LCD that renders the shooting settings.

On top of the handgrip the Mode button for exposure programmes and a button for exposure correction are positioned. Obviously the release button is found at front with around it the main switch to activate the camera.

- Release button When we view the camera on the right side, we find a second release button on the bottom with around it a switch to activate the release button. Finally we find the metal tripod at the bottom of the camera and a cover that hides the connection for the optional WiFi adaptor.

HPPhotosmart M517

this task is easily done. But is not only the easy operation,an innovative technology like the HP Real Life Technology is able to, for example, automatic correct red eyes in the picture or ensure good back light pictures directly in the camera itself.

The results can be examined comfortable on the 5cm format LCD display. Among the bases for perfect image quality is a resolution of 5 Megapixels and a total zoom of 24x (3x optical and 8x digital). The necessary storage capacity comes with a internal memory of 32MB and a card slot for optional Secure Digital or MMC cards.

HP Photosmart M517 - Easy operation

In record mode the user can choose from eight built-in scenes, among them a high-speed mode. Also in record mode the user can select between double exposure, self timer, a burst mode for series or record video clips with sound and a maximum length that depends on the storage capacity available. For power NiMH batteries (in the box) are used.

Another power source is the use of Lithium batteries or Alkaline AA format batteries. For easy editing, archiving or sharing the pictures the user can work with the standard HP Image Zone software.

HP M517 - Real Life Technology

Direct print is no problem with the support of PictBridge. The HP Photosmart M517 digital camera will be available around May 2005 with a price tag of EUR 199.

With the high quality precision lens and a 3x optical focal range (8x digital) razor sharp pictures can be captures also from a great distance. The Adaptive Lighting Technology is able to lighten dark areas and display it automatically ensuring the best quality picture possible and according what the eye sees.

DIGITAL CAMERA BASICS
This article covers the basics of digital photography which will provide a helpful insight if you are looking to purchase a new camera and to use an existing camera. If you're already the proud owner of a digital camera, you've probably spent more time snapping pictures than learning what your camera's buttons and symbols do.

Today's digital cameras fall into several categories:

COMPACT DIGITAL / POINT & SHOOT CAMERA These cameras are the most inexpensive and can cost as little as £60, but for more functionality can rise to circa £450. Compacts are small and portable and are designed to travel, so usually fit in your pocket or bag easily. They usually have zoom lenses and built in flashes, and mostly automatic settings to allow you to take pictures without understanding the complexity of photography.

DIGITAL SLR CAMERA The term Digital SLR is an acronym for digital single lens reflex. These have a larger build and true SLR cameras have interchangeable lenses allowing for different types of photography. When you look through the viewfinder, you are effectively looking through the lens itself with the help of a series of mirrors that directs the light to the viewfinder.

When you take a picture the mirror positioned behind the camera lens snaps up to expose the image on the digital sensor behind. This is why when you press the shutter the image in view disappears for a length of time, this length of time is known as shutter speed. Like the old 35mm camera experience with its interchangeable lenses, filters, and other gadgets, the digital SLR brings this experience into the digital age.

Amateur SLRs The amateur SLR usually comes as a kit, which includes the camera body and lenses, and perhaps other useful gadgets as a bundle. Prices range from £450-£900 depending on the make, functionality and build quality. These cameras are sufficient for everyday photography, and can have automatic functions as well as a number of manual functions which gives the photographer more control over image capture.

A professional camera now can be classed as an amateur camera in the future when newer and better models are released, so it can sometimes be a fine line between the most expensive 'amateur' camera and a cheap 'professional' camera.

Professional SLRs Professional cameras are generally quite expensive because they are on the edge of camera technology. When you hear the term 'professional digital SLR' it is generally referring to the camera body only. Prices for camera bodies can range for £1000-£6000 depending on the professional field of the photographer.

Lenses are purchased separately, and can range from £400 - £1200 for a good all round telefocal lens with a maximum range of 200mm-300mm. These can sometimes be purchased as kits, but do not get this confused with 'kit lenses' which are what you get with an amateur camera. Larger telefocal lenses used for professional sports photography can be as much as £8000!

MEMORY CARD BASICS A good tip when comparing memory cards is to look at price per megabyte, availability, and compatibility with your equipment.
CompactFlash cards tend to be the largest in physical size. These are available in capacities from 1GB up to 16GB. Prices have fallen dramatically in recent times so 4GB or 8GB is quite common to own.

Sony's Memory Stick format is interchangeable among all of its cameras, camcorders, and laptops. Memory Sticks persuade the customer to purchase additional Sony equipment as they can only be used with Sony products, but can be read by other manufacturers regarding laptops and PCs.

Secure Digital (SD) cards are the same size as postage stamps, most PCs and laptops and even handheld PC devices offer compatibility with this card.
xD-Picture Card is the smallest memory card and is a proprietary format for recent Fuji camera and Olympus camera.

TAKE CONTROL USING MANUAL
Moving away from the cheapest digital compact cameras, there will be manual functions on the camera settings to allow you to take your camera off autopilot and be in more control of the image exposure.

Aperture-Priority Mode Aperture-priority mode is probably the most popular manual mode allowing you to specify how wide the camera's shutter opens, and the camera automatically takes care of the other settings (shutter speed or flash) to create a correct exposure. Aperture controls depth of field in the image. Simply, it controls how much of the background is blurred or in focus, also known as bokeh, among other professional effects.

Shutter-Priority Mode Shutter-priority mode allows you to specify the speed that the shutter opens and closes, while the camera adjusts the aperture accordingly to create a correct exposure. A fast shutter is great for freezing action like in sports photography and slow speeds are great for night time photography as it allows more light into the camera while taking a shot.

Shutter speeds can be manually controlled to create wonderful effects in a number of photography fields.

White Balance Light varies depending on where you are and if not configured properly can lead to poor quality shots when printed. To compensate for varying light depending on location most cameras offer a white balance control. This setting allows you to select lighting conditions like Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, and Fluorescent.

Apples Macbook Pro

It's official:

Apple is updating its MacBook laptop line next week - the Mac maker has mailed out invites to an event at which "the spotlight turns to notebooks".

And we turn to what's likely to be announced. Centrino 2-based - but not branded - MacBook Pros are the most likely, as Apple takes advantage of Intel's latest mobile-technology update.

There's a consensus that the new models won't look radically different from the current ones, but they will sport black, lozenge-style keyboards of the kind already used on the MacBook Air.

Possible changes: the elimination of Firewire 400 ports in favour of 400-compatible - with an adaptor - Firewire 800. And a mini DVI port in place of a full-size DVI connector, primarily to help reduce the machine's thickness. We'd like to see an HDMI port too, or at least an adaptor in the box.

Air updates are a distinct possibility as Apple leverages - again - new Intel chip technology and storage developments to offer more capacious HDD and SSD models. Hopefully, the HDD models will use SATA drives - the current Air's parallel ATA drive is a key weakness. So is a lack of Ethernet and more than one USB port - we'd like to see Apple address these points too.

The consumer-oriented MacBooks look set to go aluminium, just as their desktop equivalent, the iMac, has. Think a 13.3in MacBook Pro, and you've got as a good a mental picture as any of what the new machines are expected to be.

Pricing is a subject of much debate. Will the MacBook debut at under $800 (£474/€591), as some are saying? It's possible, but a difficult trick for Apple to pull off, and speculation about fancy new manufacturing techniques - the case will be cut from a solid block of aluminium, it's been said - doesn't sit well with the notion of budget hardware.

Still, at least one analyst has forecast a MacBook with “an aggressive entry-level price point".
How about a MacBook Nano? That's been suggested too - Apple's entry into the Small, Cheap Computer arena. Given Apple's insistence that the Air sports the ideal ultra-portable laptop form-factor and the way it pitches the iPod Touch as a de facto handheld web tablet, we're sceptical, but we'd quite like to see a skinny, compact Air-style SCC nonetheless.

Whatever happens, we'll find out for sure on the evening - or morning, Cupertino time - of 14 October.
